Ive been prescribed Luvox (fluvoxamine) for social anxiety. but after taking it for a few days i’ve already developed sexual dysfunction and some other minor side effects. If i were to change to another SSRI would i still get the same side effects?

all the ssri’s and ssni’s cause sexual dysfunction. For anxiety disorders, there is no reason to take meds – you can beat them with therapy and approaching social anxiety like a phobia – beat it thru exposure.
Social anxiety is really just a fancy, scarier name for shyness. Some people are more shy than others.
Here’s my story: My teachers thought I was mentally retarded in first grade, and again in 4th grade, because I never spoke.
Here’s what I did to overcome shyness (although I am still extemely shy inside). I did a couple of plays in junior high school, debate and speech in high school, lectored at my very large catholic church in college, and ran a club of 200 people where I regularly had to get up in front of about 50 people at monthly meetings. I coached debate. I went to graduate school and was a TA for labs of about 20 students. I faked it until I made it – people can’t tell I’m shy anymore, but I am still pretty quiet in large groups. But that’s more because I have nothing to say right then – if it’s one of my topics, then I pipe up, but it almost never is since i’m kind of a nerd and political wonk – too intellectual for most of the people around me right now. So I just bore my husband with that stuff, poor guy.
So find some activities where you have to FORCE yourself to speak up, and then DO it, no matter how afraid you are. Truth is, most people are terrified of speaking up in groups. I was a high school debate coach – most of those kids of mine were terrified!! Also do some confidence building things. For me, a HUGE confidence builder was camping out under the stars in Minnesota in January – it was 20 below zero F. I froze my buns off & didn’t get a lot of sleep, but hey! I did it! I feel like if I could do that, i could do anything. Competitive activities are big confidence builders too.
If you are in a relationship, the sexual dysfunction isn’t worth it – that side effect can really strain relationships over time. Some people have gotten a benefit from trying viagra or wellbutrin along with the SSRI or SSNI, but things won’t get back to normal, just somewhat better.
consider therapy to beat your shyness, or here is a link for you: Try free computerized CBT at moodgym.anu.edu.au. Computerized therapy appears to be almost as effective as counseling, research shows.
all the best!
PS that answerer who said the sexual side effects would go away in time is wrong – that only happens for about 10% of people or so, and it takes MONTHS, and it is only improvement, the side effects don’t go away altogether. Google around & you will see that is what the research is showing – I did a lot of reading on this a few months ago.

you wouldn’t have the same side effects because most likely the antidepressants do different things. one might calm you down, one might make you happy and eager, it just depends.

Maybe. SSRIs being in the same class can sometimes affect people similarly. Not always though. Some people can do fine on one and feel terrible on another.
It is important to know though that all SSRIs the first 2 to 3 weeks on them, make you feel lousy. Dizzy, sleepy, spacey, no sex drive. These should pass.
Why did they choose an expensive brand name one like Luvox? Generic Celexa (Citalopram) is good for anxiety, has low side effect profile. Did they give you samples? Samples run out and then your actual prescription starts and it is too expensive.
Consider sticking with it for a few weeks and if side effects don’t resolve, switch then.
Good luck.

Different antidepressants will have different effects on you. Tell your doctor about the side effects each one has on you. He can start to identify the individual chemicals that have that effect on you, and eventually find one that is best for you and your needs.
