Does getting your tongue pierced hurt?

Sat, Dec 12, 2009

General

I’m 17 and I want to get mine done, but I’m a little hesitant. I’ve heard from many that it’s just a little pinch when you get it pierced, and others said it hurt like hell.
Also, what about the week following…am I going to be talking like I have some speech disorder? And is it supposed to bruise? What should I expect from a tongue piercing?

PLEASE don’t mention things idiotic like sexual stimulation. I’m not asking about that! Thank you!

okay, i got it done when i was 18 right before i went to college. it hurt when he did it… not as much as i thought it would. what helped me through it, was an image of all these prissy little girls that have it done. PLEASE, if they can i’m sure anyone can.

that week sucked. but it was only a week. there was and has been no blood involved with this piercing. i’m comming up on having it now for two years. honestly, it’s getting a little old and can be unprofessional looking. what is nice about it is now i can take it out (i’d say no longer than a week, some say longer) without any problem. do it!!

I don’t have my tongue pierced, but a few friends of mine who have it done, say it hurt, but it was nothing unbearable. Also, check out http://www.bmezine.com/pierce/02-tongue/bme-pg02.html , if you look on the right, there is a list of articles which people wrote about their experiences with tongue piercings.

You’re right. It feels like a little pinch. It’s not as bad as everyone says. Besides your tongue is the fastest healing part of your body.

Just think about how it feels when you accidentally bite your tongue. Also, think of it as an instant speech impediment.

Tongue piercings are among the riskier types of body piercing because of some possible complications associated with them. Soon after you get your tongue pierced, your tongue could swell for at least a few days. Because of this, you might not be able to eat solid foods, and you might even talk funny. If you do not become accustomed to the feel of your tongue ring, your speech might not return to normal throughout the entire time that you keep the piercing. This can make it difficult to hide from possibly disapproving parents! In addition to these annoyances, tongue piercings can also have some dangerous results because of their closeness to your airway. One of these dangers might be swallowing and choking on the jewelry. Also, an infection of the piercing can cause the tongue to swell, which might block the airway and restrict breathing. Because bacteria grows quickly in the mouth, infections can worsen quickly. In extreme cases, dentists warn that infections of the tongue piercing can cause blood poisoning or toxic shock syndrome, both of which can be fatal. All of these risks go to show that, should you decide to get pierced, proper piercing care is extremely important!
