Does lack of sexual activity cause severe menstrual pains?

Fri, Dec 25, 2009

General

I am in my early 20s and I always had menstrual cramps and disorders. My dates were more than sometimes over a month or two due. And I would feel tensed up, and kinda full and weighty around the abs and of course the pain.

I went to see to doctors and both said its mostly because at this age, I am not sexually active (I am still a virgin..which I am proud of and intend to stay till marriage). They are saying it should get better once you get involved in sexual activities.

Is this really true? Is sexual activity the only solution to the pain?

Having an orgasm has been proven to lessen the pain, but no reason to start the hanky panky. Exercise, a healthy diet, a heating pad, and some Excedrin before your expected period starts will do the trick. If you are willing to, birth control will definitely stop the cramps and even lessen the days you have your period. Birth Control does not mean you are becoming sexually active. I am on it and my severe and irregular menstruation is the only reason for it. It also takes care of mild acne. Kudos for waiting until marriage.

i don’t think that would have naything to do with it. I would see another doc. That just doesn’t sound right.

Yes it can help somewhat, it relaxed the muscles that are spasming and causing the pain. Although no reason to have sex! Good job being a virgin until marriage, thats something to be proud of. Exercise also helps. If you can get on a normal exercise routine, if not already, I bet you would notice a difference.

Yes because the muscles that cramp are overworked during menstruation trying to shed the lining of the uterus. Sex and especially orgasms workout those muscles between periods and strengthen them so they are better able to deal with periods.
Also, orgasms don’t really help with this but sex actually helps keep your vaginal walls thick and healthy. Just like brushing your teeth is good for your gums, without something going in and out and rubbing your vaginal walls once in a while, you start to experience vaginal atrophy, or thinning of the vaginal walls, which makes you more prone to breakthrough bleeding and endometriosis
