Is it ironic the bible belt has the highest rates of STDs, Teen Pregnancy, and Divorce?

Sun, Apr 4, 2010

General

The bible is so negative about something as biologically natural as sex. Is it typical or ironic that the christians are the ones with the most sexual dysfunction?

Notice sex-positive countries have much lower rates of the aforementioned statistics.

  1. Kat Says:

It is an effect of the "sinning" of sex. When you tell people something is bad over and over, the first thing (especially teenagers) want to do is try it. Opressed sexual persons often become sexual predetors as well. There are indeed fewer incidents of STDs, teen pregnancy and divorce in open minded communities and countries. You will also find a much lower rate of violent sex crimes.

  2. vrzz Says:

Let’s also not forget the divorce rates amongst christians, which of course happens to be a sin according to their own book of ignorance.

  3. God (Obama 08) Says:

    Typical.

The bible and the Christians contradict themselves a lot.

  4. Moldenke Says:

Also, purity rings are like an aphrodisiac. Christians bring it on themselves by trying to repress all of their urges.

  5. Gastounet Says:

I find it more sad than ironic dear. It demonstrates the dangers of failed public school systems and lack of education.

  6. justagirl Says:

Anyone with a brain could predict as much. But the Bible Belt also has the highest rate of poverty, highest rate of obesity, and lowest educational standards across the nation. True facts. Look ‘em up. I would but I have done it so many times already I am tired of it. Anyway, the correlation between all these things is readily apparent for anyone honest enough to see it for what it is.

  7. ~Smirk~ Resurrected Says:

STDs and teen pregnancy – Birth control and condoms are DISCOURAGED from being made available to teenagers lest the teens get the inclination that the adults are "allowing" them to have sex. Like teenagers wait around for permission, or something.

Divorce- if you can’t have sex until marriage, you’re going to find some pretty trumped up reasons to get married so you can just DO IT already. I say respect the institution of marriage: fornicate like a damn rabbit before you get married.

  8. SDW Says:

Government-sponsored distribution of condoms and abortions keep the stats lower in a lot of European nations.

    EDIT:
I believe that Indonesia is actually the country with the highest rate of teen pregnancy–but they marry young there, so usually those teen mothers are married.

  9. Happy Human Says:

I’m not surprised at all .

it’s not ironic at all ,it’s normal…and they want to ban homosexuality…haha …I laugh …

  10. I make it rain Says:

    Irony Much?

  11. Monkey Man Says:

Well seeing as they don’t teach they’re children anything about sex it’s no wonder they have all the problems they have!

I agree with crealose below. In Ireland they all mysteriously go to England for a couple of weeks and come back a lot skinnier!!

Deeviousangel below has the typical response it’s the non-believers and Christian "wannabees" that are causing the problems. Not the bad sex education that teaches abstinence and is proven to have failed.

  12. Duke Says:

not really. non-christians live in the bible belt too and happen to be at the whims of a majority that doesn’t want comprehensive sex education or healthy attitudes toward sex.

  13. The Saint Says:

And probably the highest number of Purity Ball parties in the States, too!

  14. creolerose1115 Says:

You’ll notice, that in most nations/areas (Ireland, most of Central America, Ethiopia) that use literal biblical tenents as the bedrock of socitey, there is quite a lot of irony in terms of pre-marital sexual activity, out-of-wedlock children, divorce spawned from shotgun marriages, etc. I grew up in the South and I love this place, but the irony is not lost on me. Thankfully, I grew up with more progressive parents who believed in education.

  15. mossflower_wood Says:

Can you honestly say you’re surprised?

Christianity represses all things sexual. Many want to teach only abstinance, instead of safe sex methods.

  16. Tony Says:

Funny how Christians ask others to fallow the bible, when they don’t themselves.

  17. Risteard Says:

Not really, in my opinion, a lot of the younger generation might not share the same religious views as their older counterparts and so want to break free from religion’s hold and just do things. It’s the old thing, tell someone not to do something and they’ll want to do it more.

  18. ThomasJeffersonn Says:

Not ironic, makes perfect sense really.

  19. JohnsHopkins Says:

No, it is not ironic – it is to be expected. Now pass me a rattlesnake…

  20. If what I said is True. Says:

Are you aware how some of these so called "Christians" contracted the virus. You do know that some people are born with the decease because of their parents , right? Then there are those who contracted it from the use of infected needles. From a spouse too ya know. You are sitting there and stereotyping. Be careful of that. people might have changed their lives and had the decease already.

I do agree though that "christians" are breaking God’s Laws. You cant group people by that word you know. God Calls "Christians" Babylon the Great. But then there are true Christians. There is a difference.

  21. Deeviousangel Says:

well sweetie i must dash your hopes in being right. the bible belt as you call it is only worn by a very small handful of those you call christians. and if studies were done they would find that of christian wannabes, non believers, and true christians, the christian rank of teen pregnancies, STDs, and divorces are not as common as you think. they are more pronounce in non believers and christian wannabes

  22. Alan L Says:

I don’t think it’s ironic. Belief in God, as well as teen pregnancy and divorce, varies directly with how poor you are. STDs and teen pregnancy are not sexual dysfunctions, they’re the natural consequences of poor education and resources.

  23. txteclipse Says:

Satan doesn’t need to work on people that he already has in his possession. It’s much more tactful to try and coerce Christians into sinning in an attempt to get them to turn from God: he causes them to lose their faith, along with condemning all the people they were meant to lead to God in life.

  24. halloweenie Says:

i don’t see any irony in it at all. it’s exactly what i would expect, having lived in the bible belt for most of my life. the people who push abstinence only sex ‘education’ give very little information on sex and the consequences, and NO information about how to prevent pregnancies and stds. then they tell you that masturbating is ALSO sinful, so what are you supposed to do with your pent up sexuality? the little bits of advice they give out on how to abstain is outdated and not likely to work against raging hormones and curiosity.

  25. Jen M Says:

Yeah, it is. I thought there would be a higher rate of stds and teen pregnancy in Cali where they have better health care and more abortionists.

  26. Dia Laech (God's Warrior) Says:

Is it a coincidence that the command to not have incest was given only after genetic defects were bound to happen? Adam and Eve were created perfect and so they had no genetic defect. But when they sinned, they were no longer pure. So you can imagine that after many generations, genetic defects would slowly appear.

You think that God would know about STD’s? Why do you think God gave the command to not have sex outside of marriage? If you think carefully, all of God’s commands protect us from something bad. And if we break His commands, we end up hurting ourselves. See the connection?

  27. I Tot I Taw A Puddy Tat Says:

Maybe it is not the Bible, but who is teaching and what they are and are not teaching. Sex is for marriage, procreation not unmarried recreation. Studying and adhereing to bible principles helps us to benefit ourselves in a positive way. Man’s way is destructive.

  28. The devil wears hollister. Says:

You forget rape! I live in the bible belt. A lot of the christians are obnoxious and think they know everything. But some of them are kind and generally care about people.

  29. RoCkStars *Wife* Says:

Do you even have a clue about what you’re talking about?

    Id say not.

  30. michael Says:

Ironic is not the word I would use. I read the statistics as evidence of the disintegration of the bible belt as such. It’s not terribly surprising that chaos follows the jettisoning of cultural mores foundational to a group. Especially when nothing is put in their place. Hypocrisy is disgusting. I cannot possibly agree more. But you can’t honestly believe that these stats reflect genuine practice of the faith these people profess. You might as well blame drunk drivers on the laws established to eliminate them. The bible is not negative about sex. It simply lays down the rules for sexual expression in a viable human society. When a society abandons the rules, it disintegrates. If anything, the case under discussion validates this reasoning completely. You point to Europe as a shining example of the benefits of sexual hedonism. Yet within a generation or two, Europe will be Muslim. Maybe you ought to ask yourself why…

    peace

Edit: No. I don’t see Islam as God’s judgment! It’s a simple case of a vibrant, living culture overwhelming a decadent dying one. And that’s my point completely.

  31. Angel Mom Says:

The Bible Belt is also one of the oldest practicing Christian areas in North America. Many years ago, even in non-Christian families, it was considered taboo to talk about sex out of fear that talking about it was an invitation to doing it. While most of society has grown out of this stage, the Bible Belt unfortunately has not, which is why they are in this situation.

I don’t know where you are getting your information about the bible being so negative about sex… God created it and it’s great. But it was also created for procreation purposes, which is why it is God’s command that sexual relations be between husband and wife. Of course not all people accept this, to each their own. It’s between them and God, not me.

In the church that I attend here in Canada, we’ve had services on how to talk to your children about sex. It is no longer a taboo subject and I think we would all be better off just being honest about it instead of hiding it.
