Papsmear – abnormal, but had sexual activity before?

Fri, Mar 5, 2010

General

hello
about a month ago, I had a papsmear done at my gynecologist. the thing is, like an hour before I had sex with my boyfriend (out of complete ignorance that it affects the result, supposedly).
the result came out as abnormal, but as I have been told that sexual activity interfers with the results, what are the chances that’s the case? as you can imagine I’m quite worried…
what are the chances it’s cervical cancer?

it depends upon what the results say. if you tested +ive for HPV then the sex does not matter. Call your doctors office and let them know what you did. in anycase from now on you now know that it is best to refrain from sexual activity for 24-48 hours before your apt.

Although I’m male and not fully qualified on this….. Go have another smear and refrain beforehand. Seems like common sense to me. Good Luck.

by the way as it’s abnormal, wouldn’t you have a follow-up smear anyway?

It’s too soon to worry. You’ll need a repeat test. Even then, if it’s abnormal, a biopsy will be necessary before they can tell you for sure. The pap is just a screening tool. I know several women that have gone thru this and are perfectly fine – no cancer, that is.

    Good luck!
