Should parents use vaccine to leverage teen sexual activity?

Wed, Oct 28, 2009

General

Drug makers Glaxo Smith Cline and Merck have just released cervical cancer vaccines called Gardasil and Cervarix which (according to research) provides 100% protection to the HPV that causes cervical cancer but it should be administered to girls before their first sexual activity. Advocates are suggesting ages 10-14. Proponents believe the vaccine can mislead girls to think they are safe after the vaccine. Should parents refuse to pay for the expensive vaccine to prevent their daughters from having promiscuous sex? Do you think this will be social debate soon?

I really dislike that leap concerned citizens make about what licenses teens will take with their bodies and why. Vaccinations are always a good thing. The end. The nature of vaccines has ALWAYS been such that the doctors cannot control what the vaccinated youngster does following the treatment. What else is new? Young women should be taught self-esteem and dignity, so they’re not whores. The cervical cancer vaccine will not prompt a virtuous nun to sleep around, any more than keeping the vaccine from the town bicycle will give her pause about the next guy she meets.

I think it’s the smart thing to do. Parents have to face reality teenagers have sex. I would want my daughter protected from cervical cancer. They just need education about safe sex and HIV which the parents should be doing even if they don’t get the vaccinne

Yeah, but no one isn’t having sex because they are afraid of HPV, no one.
Almost the entire population is infected with it at one time or another in their lives. Usually it clears on it’s own, but there are only a few strains of HPV which are linked to cervical cancer, called high risk HPV strains.
I don’t think that taking the vaccine or not will make them more or less prone to sexual activity. Already everyone knows the dangers and still people have unprotected sex.
So, if people have sex knowing the dangers of having it unprotected, but still do it, why would they do it more just because they got a vaccine? If they thought the vaccine protected them from AIDS or pregnancy, they would be pretty stupid.
The only risk I think in getting the vaccine is the unknown long and short term dangers of getting the vaccine itself.
Vaccines are drugs, if they make a law requiring now that every 10-14 year old girl gets this vaccine, there will be a whole american generation of female guinie pigs, who knows what the adverse effects of THIS vaccine will be???

Injecting a horny teen with a vaccine will not curve their instinctual sexual urges.

That’s a crock! These little twits have never been educated enough for HPV and potential cervical cancer to enter their heads until the recent t.v. ads started running. Up until that point half of them didn’t care too much if they got pregnant! Look at the stats! HIV is scarcely on their radar. Most of them still think you can tell by looking if someone is HIV positive. And ask me if the ones who do know a few real truths are actually protecting themselves? NO
