Those are the things you need to ’survive’. To determine what you really need in life you must find what you seek to achieve. If you want to merely survive then yes, thats all you need. Perhaps if you want to make something out of your life, you need more, depending on what you plan to achieve. Monetary success? Fame? Having helped others? These are the things one thinks about when looking back on his life, not how much food they ate or how much sex they had.

Ok maybe how much sex they had….

  18. Sir Hound Says:

A psychologist named Abraham Maslow has a Hierarchy of needs that is very popular in the scientific arena. It states that we have different needs, but that some are more important than others. The ones you listed (with the exception of love) are the most primary of needs, but once those are fulfilled, we need other things, like security. Then it goes to needing to feel loved and accepted, and past that we need to be happy. The last level of necessity is that of self actualization, which is difficult to describe, but basically means they need to be productive, and to contribute to society. Some people don’t get to this level, however.

Here’s a link to it on Wikipedia, and although that’s not the best source, its a start until you can find some other literature (if indeed you are interested).

  22. gpr Says:

Food is any substance, usually composed primarily of carbohydrates, fats, water and/or proteins, that can be eaten or drunk by an animal for nutrition or pleasure. Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role.

Most traditions have a recognizable cuisine, a specific set of cooking traditions, preferences, and practices, the study of which is known as gastronomy. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption.

Many cultures study the dietary analysis of food habits. While humans are omnivores, religion and social constructs such as morality often affect which foods they will consume. Food safety is also a concern with foodborne illness claiming many lives each year. In many languages, food is often used metaphorically or figuratively, as in "food for thought".
