If you go to a doctor and you’re still a minor, is the doctor allowed to talk to your parents about your condition? For example, could he tell them that you are sexually active and therefore contracted something?

depends on which state you reside in. In many states, if you are 16 or older, the laws regarding patient confidentiality protect you from any information going beyond the doctor’s office, in other words, he cannot say anything to your parents. You would have to check the laws in your state. If you are under 16, then the law doesn’t protect your information from your parents. But, it really is a moot point, if you have an std, you have to be treated, and your parents aren’t morons, they will know you are being treated, and if they see the medication, they will know what you are being treated for. Suggest that if you want to be treated like an adult, and have all the priviledges of an adult, like participating in sex, they you need to act like one. Adults don’t have to lie to their parents about what they do.

i think the laws vary by state. in ohio you are not allowed to share info with the parents if the minor is not accompanied into the office by a parent. they wouldn’t share that type of info without your permission, unless it was life threatening.

Ask the doc. Im sure hell reassure you that its just between you. However, if he sends you out with a valtrex prescription, some flags might go off in mommy’s head.

well there is patient doctor confidentiality, but if you start taking meds for an STD or something your parents are going to figure it out, not to mention, they are the one’s paying for it.

Usually, they ask you questions like that in private because minors are more likely to lie about stuff like that in front of their parents. If you actually have an STD, he may or may not tell them. (I’m thinking he will tell them that you have an STD but I don’t think he would say, its because you were sexually activie unless directly asked)

Iowa they have a privacy policy that protects the child and the parent but if is something like STD than they have the right to tell the parents for the fact that they are in CHARGE of the BILL.
depends where you live.
Go to parenthood they don’t need parents consent.
